Skal Europe had a Sustainable Tourism Awards already in 2021, and we look forward to honouring the new award winners in the next European General Assembly.
Why sustainable tourism awards?
Europe is a continent with a population of 500 million, subject to seasonal domestic mass travel for holidays, and attracting worldwide intercontinental travel to its top destinations. The industry employs approximately 38 million Europeans (2019) and it generated 1,500 billion Euros in 2022 (down from 2,150 in 2019). With almost 700 million arrivals (2019) Europe is the first destination in the world, with over 50% of the arrivals share (EU+non EU countries).
Unless proper measures are taken such huge numbers can destroy whatever destination.
The United Nations Agenda 2030 is the most advanced guideline for sustainable development. With its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which break down into 169 individual targets, the Agenda 2030 includes criteria that impact all aspects of social and economic growth, including the tourism industry.
The Skal Europe Awards for Sustainable Tourism will evaluate existing projects that address one or more of the following:
Economy
Supported by a prosperous environment and society, the SDGs from an economic point of view focused on industry, innovation and infrastructure, the reduction of inequality, responsible consumption and production; decent work and growth disassociated from environmental deterioration.
Society
Social development is impossible if the environment is harmed and natural resources become scarce. Thus, the SDGs associated with clean energy, the eradication of poverty and hunger, peace and justice, sustainable cities, education, gender equality and health, serve as a foundation for goals that are financial in nature.
Environment
A healthy environment is an essential starting point for promoting social justice and economic development. If we fail to meet the targets regarding clean water and sanitation, marine life, life on land and climate action, we will never achieve the other higher objectives.

Skal Europe will use the same format as Skal International Sustainable Tourism Awards.

Deadlines for submitting projects
Awards will be given to winning projects during the 2023 Skal Europe General Assembly on November 4th, 2023.
The deadline for the presentation of projects for the Skal Europe Awards is September 15, 2023.
