Interview with Pilar Gómez Reina: Promoting Excellence and Sustainable Tourism in Cádiz and Andalusia

Today, we are honoured to speak with Pilar Gómez Reina, a dynamic leader in the tourism sector of Cádiz and Andalusia and a long-standing member of Skål International Cádiz since 2012. As the driving force behind the first edition of the Skål International Tourism Forum in Cádiz, Pilar has been a passionate advocate for promoting sustainable tourism and excellence in the region. With her dedication to creating opportunities for collaboration, debate, and raising awareness of quality tourism practices, Pilar is not only shaping the future of tourism in Andalusia but also setting a standard for how destinations can balance heritage, sustainability, and modern tourism. In this interview, Pilar shares her vision for tourism in Cádiz and the importance of sustainability in the industry.

Skal Europe: Pilar, thank you for joining us. Can you start by telling us about your journey with Skål International and how it led to your involvement in promoting sustainable tourism in Cádiz?

Pilar Gómez Reina: Thank you for having me! My journey with Skål International began in 2012 when I joined the Skål International Cádiz club. Since then, I’ve taken on various roles, including Treasurer, Secretary, President of Skal Cádiz, Auditor of Accounts for Skal International Spain, and Treasurer for Skal International Spain. Throughout this journey, I’ve always been passionate about promoting Cádiz as a top tourism destination, which is why I’ve worked closely with my colleague Josefa Díaz Delgado to make Cádiz’s rich history and potential more visible within the Skål network. My dedication to sustainable tourism grew over time, and I felt a strong need to focus on projects that could enhance our region’s image as a destination that prioritizes quality and sustainability.

Skal Europe: You have been instrumental in organizing the Skål International Tourism Forum in Cádiz. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this initiative and its objectives?

Pilar Gómez Reina: The idea for the Skål International Tourism Forum came from a desire to create a space where tourism professionals could come together to discuss and promote sustainable tourism practices. We wanted to highlight the importance of diplomacy, quality, and excellence in tourism, especially in a region as culturally rich and diverse as Cádiz. The forum is structured into three main days: Tourism and Diplomacy Day, the Skålity and Sustainability Day, and the Vive Cádiz Day. Each day focuses on different aspects of tourism, intending to raise awareness about the need for sustainable practices, promoting the unique cultural heritage of Andalusia, and celebrating the contributions of individuals and organizations who are making a difference in the tourism sector.

Skal Europe: The Skålity and Sustainability Awards are a significant part of this forum. What inspired you to create these awards, and what impact do you hope they will have on tourism in Andalusia?

Pilar Gómez Reina: The Skålity and Sustainability Awards were created to recognize and reward the outstanding efforts of individuals, companies, and organizations that are committed to promoting sustainable tourism in Andalusia. I believe that by highlighting the achievements of those who are making a real impact, we can inspire others to follow their lead and implement sustainable practices in their businesses. These awards also serve to elevate the visibility of Andalusia as a region that values sustainability, quality, and excellence in tourism. By aligning with the global vision of Skål International and the UNWTO, we hope to position Cádiz and Andalusia as leading examples of responsible tourism on an international stage.

Skal Europe: It’s clear that you are deeply invested in promoting Cádiz as a premier destination. How do you balance the promotion of tourism with the need to preserve the cultural heritage and environment of the region?

Pilar Gómez Reina: For me, promoting tourism and preserving our cultural heritage go hand in hand. It’s about showcasing Cádiz as an authentic and vibrant destination while ensuring that our traditions, history, and environment are respected and protected. Through the activities and initiatives we organize, such as the guided walking tours and gastronomic routes during Vive Cádiz Day, we aim to provide tourists with a genuine experience of our city’s heritage. By encouraging sustainable practices, we ensure that visitors enjoy all that Cádiz has to offer without compromising its beauty and cultural significance for future generations.

Skal Europe: You’ve been involved in many aspects of tourism development over your career. How do you believe the principles of Skål International align with your goals for sustainable tourism in Andalusia?

Pilar Gómez Reina: Skål International’s principles of “doing business among friends” resonate deeply with me because I believe tourism should be a collaborative effort. It’s not just about attracting visitors; it’s about creating meaningful connections, supporting the local economy, and fostering an environment where tourism professionals can work together to promote sustainability. By integrating these values into my work with Skål International Cádiz, I’ve been able to develop initiatives like the Skål International Tourism Forum that bring people together, encourage best practices, and drive sustainable growth for our region.

Skal Europe: Lastly, could you share with us your vision for the future of tourism in Cádiz and how you plan to further promote sustainability?

Pilar Gómez Reina: My vision is for Cádiz to be recognized as a destination that not only offers incredible experiences but also upholds the highest standards of sustainability and quality. I believe that by continuing to work closely with local stakeholders, businesses, and institutions, we can build a tourism model that respects our cultural heritage, promotes responsible practices, and ensures that the benefits of tourism are felt throughout the community. I am particularly excited about our candidacy to host the Skal International World Congress in Cádiz in 2027, as it will provide an opportunity to showcase our commitment to sustainability on a global platform.

Skal Europe: Pilar, thank you for sharing your insights and for your incredible work in promoting sustainable tourism in Cádiz and Andalusia. Your dedication is truly inspiring.

Pilar Gómez Reina: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure to share my journey, and I look forward to continuing to work towards a more sustainable future for tourism in our beautiful region.
