Recognizing Excellence in Sustainable Tourism

On 28 September 2024, Skal Europe proudly held its online Annual General Assembly, where four distinguished awards were presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership in promoting sustainability within the tourism industry. These awards celebrate the innovative efforts, community engagement, and commitment to preserving cultural and natural heritage across Europe. Here’s a recap of the winners and their remarkable achievements:

1. Sustainability: Cultural Heritage – Italy (Skal Roma)

The first award was presented to Ornella Naccari for her outstanding contribution to conserving and revitalizing the cultural heritage of the Venetian territories through her project that combines Shakespearean theatre with immersive tourism experiences. By blending theatre, history, and local traditions, Ornella has created unique and unforgettable journeys that transform tourists into active participants in the rich narratives of cities like Verona, Venice, and Padua. Her Shakespearean Walking Tours and interactive performances have redefined cultural tourism, turning historical sites into living stages and offering an authentic and engaging way to experience Italy’s heritage. This innovative approach has allowed visitors to connect deeply with the region’s culture, making Ornella a true ambassador for sustainable tourism and storytelling.

3. Sustainability: Sustainable Technology Applied in Rural Environments – Austria

Kommerzialrat Albert Ebner, owner and manager of the “Das Hintersee Hotel and Resort,” was honoured with the third award for his remarkable use of sustainable technology to promote eco-friendly tourism in a rural environment. As a family-owned establishment since 1790, “Das Hintersee Hotel and Resort” has evolved from a small countryside inn into a modern resort that seamlessly integrates renewable energy solutions, such as a woodchip heating system and photovoltaic solar panels. Albert’s commitment to using BWT water purification technology has further minimized the resort’s environmental impact, making it a true model for sustainability. By offering year-round activities such as e-mountain biking and ski touring, Albert has not only preserved the natural beauty of his rural setting but has also set a benchmark for sustainable practices in rural tourism. His dedication to combining tradition with innovative, sustainable technology is a shining example of how rural tourism can thrive while protecting the environment.
